5 games to play this New Year’s Eve

What are your plans for New Year’s Eve? In this type of homemade parties, we cannot miss some games for everyone to have a good time in this wonderful night.

What are your plans for New Year’s Eve? I love to get together with my best friends at home and enjoy good wines, delicious food and an entertaining conversation. In this type of homemade parties, we cannot miss some games for everyone to have a good time in this wonderful night.

Yes. You can obviously buy some board games inspired by the world of wine, but I prefer to concentrate this night on a great menu and pairings for my friends. I prefer the simple and homemade games, but yet just as entertaining. Keep reading. Be inspired for these holidays.

1. The best of last year

The last day of the year pushes us to remember how the last twelve months were. To avoid becoming too nostalgic, I recommend a game. Think about the best moments with a wine that refreshes our memory: with the cheerful bubbles of Casillero del Diablo Devil’s Collection Brut. The goal is to start the evening and talk about our favorite wines, discover new strains, regions and vineyards, all the memories of the best wines we uncorked last year.

I invite you to prepare 15-20 cards (the most entertaining thing is to make them by hand), including some fundamental questions: what was the best wine of the year? The most impressive wine event? The most entertaining trip? The most handsome winemaker? Yes, I know. Do not take me into account. I got too girly.

2. The rules of the house

This game is very funny. As a hostess, I command in my house and everyone has to follow my rules. But beware! My rules change every 15 minutes. The guests who do not follow them are going out of game, until having our champion of the night. Some of my rules are:

  • Instead of the word “thank you” you should say “Chardonnay”
  • You cannot use the word “wine glass”
  • You cannot take the wine glass with your left hand
  • Before drinking a sip of wine, you should blink
  • Guests can only drink a rosé wine like Casillero del Diablo Rosé

3. Word chain

This is a very fun game that tests our general knowledge and invites a good conversation. To begin with, a person chooses a category, like a region of the world. We all go around in a circle naming a variety of wine, for example “Carmenere”, “Pinot Noir”, “Carignan” and so on. The player who cannot name a new wine variety after 10 seconds loses and is out of the game.

Then we choose a new category and the game continues until there is only one player left: our winner. Keep in mind, though, that the categories are not limited to wine. They can be food, spices, flavors of the world, whatever you want. With this game, I recommend some rich and fresh whites such as Casillero del Diablo Viognier or Trio Chardonnay, as well as some cheese boards.

4. Challenge of tasting

It’s basically a blind tasting. Put some well-known and other rarer wines on the table. Each guest must write down the name of strain, region and vintage. Only you, as a host, know the details of the wines. The winner takes home a bottle of his favorite wine. While my friends rack their brains on, I enjoy a glass of Terrunyo Carmenere. I will tell you a secret: it is one of the wines of the game, but shhh… Do not tell anyone.

5. New Year’s Resolutions

This is a game that will give you the opportunity to share your wine resolutions for the New Year. The trick is that you will have to play the riddles, trying to discover who is who. Use some pieces of paper and ask the guests to list their New Year wishes, such as “visit Bordeaux”, organize a picnic in a vineyard, etc. Gather all the resolutions in a basket and then try to guess which resolution belongs to which guest.

And when the time comes 00:00, uncork a sparkling that radiates joy and elegance: Subercaseaux Grande Cuvée. This ensures a prosperous New Year.
