With more than 21 million users, the online application Vivino gives annual awards for the best examples of each variety, based on consumer scores and opinions.
The Vivino team joins with renowned sommelier and Master of Wine Evan Goldstein and uses the information to evaluate each category and determine the winners.
In the 2017 edition of the Vivino Wine Style Awards, the first place winner in the Carmenere category was winemaker Ignacio Recabarren’s 2009 Carmín de Peumo made with grapes from the Peumo Vineyard in the Peumo D.O.
They described it as a wine with great elegance, character, and exceptional fruit expression, which positions the variety among the highest of the world’s wine industry.
The users also recognized the 2009 Terrunyo Carmenere—another wine by Ignacio Recabarren—among the top 10 places, marking another milestone for the winemaker’s work with the variety.
