Caring for the environment has become a cross-cutting issue and a duty for everyone. The way we live today will impact tomorrow and future generations, so we should all be aware and translate it into concrete actions.
At Viña Concha y Toro environmental care is a real commitment, reflected in a series of initiatives that seek to mitigate its impact on the environment.
The company began calculating its carbon footprint in 2007, identifying that 56% of its emissions came from indirect sources, associated mainly with the use of packaging. In order to reduce the environmental impact of its wine brands, the company decided to decrease the weight of bottles.
While at first glance they seem the same, “light bottles” are made of 25% recycled material and weigh on average 14% less than traditional bottles. All this translates into a decrease in energy consumption in their production and lower fuel consumption in distribution.
Since the company introduced light bottles in 2010, this initiative has allowed the reduction of more than 48 thousand tons glass used and a consequent decrease in the carbon footprint of 55 thousand tons of CO2e. Currently, over 90% of bottles used by the winery are these more environmentally friendly bottles.
“This initiative is part of our commitment to the environment, which we have expressed in our sustainability strategy. By using light bottles we are reducing the carbon footprint of our products and promoting sustainable behavior among our consumers around the world who are becoming increasingly aware and concerned about preferring products that respect the planet,” says Valentina Lira, Viña Concha y Toro’s Sustainability Manager.
This is just one of the actions carried out by Viña Concha y Toro as part of its sustainability strategy, a differentiating pillar of the company’s business model, which provides the basis for its sustainable growth.
