Extraordinary vintage for Amelia

Share

The Limarí Valley has produced some excellent quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and many more top-level wines are expected from this region.

There harvest conditions were great this year for the Amelia brand.

The 2020-2021 season was, broadly speaking, colder than average as a result of the La Niña phenomenon, which delayed the ripening of the grapes. This set the start of the harvest back to the week commencing February 15, which was two weeks later than 2020.

“In the Limarí valley, the harvest started successfully and in perfect conditions. The first samples are very promising. We believe that we will have wines of extraordinary quality,” said Concha y Toro’s winemaker and technical director Marcelo Papa.

Generally speaking, both of Amelia’s varieties should be excellent in 2021, very fresh, acidic and intense. The Chardonnay is displaying a wonderful balance with “rich acidity and salinity and good sugar levels, which suggests that it will be an excellent vintage,” says Papa. The same conditions bode well for the Pinot Noir.

The Limarí valley has colluvial soils, rich in clay and calcium carbonate, which allow for a slow ripening of the grape, creating fresh, complex wines with multiple layers of aromas.

It was here that the Amelia brand was born, a tribute to a woman who has pushed the limits. The wine is a great exponent of this terroir and a tribute to the expert oenologist Marcelo Papa, who has constantly strived to find the best terroir to grow each of Concha y Toro’s ultra-premium varieties that this year promise to be superb.
