In a report published by James Suckling called “A different Chile: greatness beckons, but is it a leap too far?”, the American wine critic praised Concha y Toro’s portfolio, giving the wines excellent scores.
After tasting a total of 1,065 bottles of Chilean wine, Suckling and his team concluded that “the Andean country is churning out bottles of excellent quality and remarkable value, and these characteristics were cemented by fantastic 2018 and 2019 vintages.”
The report added that the syrah wines they tasted were world class, expressing different terroirs and showing great enological prowess. “The quality, diversity and more-than-reasonable price points convinced us that Chilean syrah has come of age.”
By way of example, Gravas del Maipo Syrah 2019, was the highest scoring of all of Concha y Toro wines. This wine together with the Gravas del Maipo Cabernet Sauvignon (95 points), were the highest scoring wines.
Of course, Carmín de Peumo 2018, considered the best Carmenere in the World, was not far behind receiving an excellent 94 points. The wines from the unexplored and extreme Limarí Valley, Amelia Chardonnay 2019 and Amelia Pinot Noir 2019, obtained an incredible 94 points each. Marques de Casa Concha Black Label 2019 and Marques de Casa Concha Ed. Limitada Pinot Noir 2019, wines that are part of the line led by Marcelo Papa, also known as “the noble roots seeker,” received the same scores.
Asked about the 2019 vintage, Papa, who is Concha y Toro‘s technical director of enology said, “I would consider the vintage to be in line with that of 2018, only a little warmer, which produced more powerful and flavorsome, though slightly less elegant, wines.”
