Marcelo Papa, winemaker and Technical Director for Concha y Toro, was named the 2024 Winemaker of the Year by the Descorchados wine guide, in recognition of his career and significant contribution to the quality and internationalization of Chilean wines.
“Marcelo Papa has played a key role in the recent history of Chilean wine, for his pioneering work in the north, for his contribution to Carmenere, for Marques [de Casa Concha], which is one of the most solid lines in Chile, and for making wines like Casillero [del Diablo], which are so good and so many,” explains Patricio Tapia, the journalist in charge of the wine guide, on the reasons for recognizing Papa.
“I feel like this is a collective recognition of the Concha y Toro team for their professional work, passion, and relentless pursuit of the highest quality in the work we do. I deeply appreciate this distinction as it drives us to continue working towards excellence in all that we do and to contribute to the recognition of Chile as a producer of great wines,” comments Marcelo Papa.
Marcelo has been with Concha y Toro since 1998, and since then, he has led some of the winery’s most prestigious brands such as Casillero del Diablo, Marques de Casa Concha, and Amelia. His relentless spirit of exploration, coupled with his passion and enthusiasm for discovering the authenticity and nobility of different terroirs, has led him to find the best places to produce wines with attractive personalities and a true sense of origin. This has made him one of the most influential figures in the national wine scene.
The numerous national and international recognitions his wines have received—always surpassing the 90-point mark—attest to a meticulous winemaking process, positioning him as a leader in the high-end wine segment and an undisputed role model in terms of consistency and solidity at the global level.
